Welcome to Mercia Asperger Support Team

Ever since I was a child I felt that for some reason I didn’t fit in – rather like a detached observer witnessing my own life. On the surface I appeared to be like everyone else, though some might say aloof and a little obsessive at times. Sadly, it wasn’t until the breakdown of my marriage that I sought some assistance and tried to understand what went wrong.

It was at this point that I was recommended to speak to Barrie Thomspon.

I had never felt the need to seek a counsellor and had always viewed psychotherapy with a degree of scepticism, so I was unsure of what to expect. However, Barrie was simply excellent and very quickly put me at my ease. He recognised that I showed the classic traits of someone who was Aspergic and his counselling truly transformed my understanding and my life thus far.

His no-nonsense approach is straightforward and puts you at ease to enable you to speak about painful personal experiences and to share events that may have caused problems.

I would recommend Barrie without hesitation for any aspect of counselling, but especially for those with Asperger Syndrome.

My wife and I have a son with Asperger Syndrome. He is 36 years old now and up until ten years ago we had never had a diagnosis. Life has been difficult and we have never had any help from any quarter, in fact we had been pushed from one department to another each one saying that our son didn’t fit their criteria. We were introduced to Barrie Thompson through a mutual friend and he kindly took an interest in our son’s condition. We saw Barrie on a professional basis for a couple of months and the improvement in our son has been remarkable. Barrie has put strategies in place for our son to follow whenever he gets over stressed. As well as helping us to get an official diagnosis Barrie has arranged for him to hopefully get a job in a more suitable environment. Through Barrie’s understanding of Asperger Syndrome he has helped us to appreciate our son’s condition more than we ever did before and hopefully what we have learnt will help us all in the future. Barrie no longer sees our son on a regular basis, but it is of great comfort to us as a family to know that he is there for advice if we need him. We would recommend any person or couple who are struggling with Aspergers to see Barrie as he has been a great help to us.

Following our daughter’s diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome it quickly became apparent that there is very little ongoing help, advice and support for the families of AS people.

We were getting desperate for practical and emotional support from anybody who had REAL experience of living with AS. We logged onto the computer and began to search for support groups. What we found was far, far better. We found Barrie Thompson.

Barrie will never describe himself as an expert but what he doesn’t know about the AS mind is probably, as they say, ‘Not worth knowing!’

Over the years that followed Barrie was to become our rock, our lifeline, our oracle, advisor and friend. Words cannot convey how valuable Barrie’s guidance has been throughout our AS journey.
